Monterro invests in Grunden AI to provide portfolio companies with sovereign AI infrastructure at predictable costs

Monterro, a leading European software growth investor, today announced it has made a majority investment in Grunden AI, a Swedish AI infrastructure company which platform will serve as the technical foundation for the recently launched Monterro Enclave. Enclave gives Monterro’s portfolio companies access to leading open-weight models, at predictable cost, guaranteed data sovereignty, without model lock-in. Grunden AI is the engine that makes that possible. Grunden AI will continue to operate as an independent business and sell to customers beyond Monterro’s portfolio.

Grunden AI runs its own GPU clusters on the latest hardware, hosted in Nordic data centres. A control layer on top of this infrastructure lets customers securely access and manage AI models.

Models are served through an OpenAI-compatible API, which means companies can switch models or providers without rewriting their code. Data stays in Europe, and the platform is built for GDPR and the EU Data Act from the ground up, not bolted on afterwards.

Grunden’s offerings are mainly for two groups: for software companies embedding AI in their products, who need predictable unit economics and an easy way to move between models, and for organisations that want to use AI internally through Grunden Cowork, an AI harness for teams, with folders, shared threads, and file uploads.

When Monterro launched Enclave, it set out three things every European software company now needs: European data sovereignty, freedom from dependence on a single AI provider, and costs companies can plan around. Grunden AI’s platform delivers all three. Its infrastructure keeps data under European ownership, its model-agnostic architecture lets portfolio companies route the right task to the right model and swap models without disruption, with predictable costs.
